St. Peters Castle - Bodrum, Turkey

Another day begins in Gumbet Harbor on a glass surface. The winds were strong the day before, now gone.

We begin our day with Katie's favorite game - "catch the string against the wall". She dominates.

We took a bus into Bodrom again, this time to visit the Castle of St. Peter (1402-37) and home of the Hall of Underwater Archaelogy. Did you get any shots from the outside Jim? Um, no.

But have you ever seen a castle like this inside? I haven't.

In addition to all types of trees and flowering bushes, it contained all kinds of birds.

Even a peacock.

That tower is over St. Peters chapel.

The castle overlooks the Mediterranean Sea.

And the Bodrum Harbor.

And the Bodrum Marina

Another view of the harbor.

Now a family photo.

This is a re-creation of a Roman era ship transporting amphora - Roman era jugs for wine, water, olive oil, etc.

This is an exhibit of Amphora recovered from the Med in the Hall of Underwater Archaeology. They date from 3rd century B.C. to 4th century A.D. and didn't change much in design.

Here are 2 examples from 2nd century B.C. The two handles on top combine with the bottom which acts as a third handle. These ones were most likely from Kos, our last island. Kos wine was most popular due to its low price. See, people bargain shopped 2200 years ago.

Jenée's standing over a Roman bronze anchor from the 1st century A.D. OK, quick history breakdown on rulers of the Med;

  • Egyptians 4000 B.C - 1600 B.C. (2400 years)
  • Minoans and Achaeans 1600 B.C. - 1200 B.C. (400 years)
  • Phoneceans 1200 B.C. - 700 B.C. (500 years)
  • Greeks 700 B.C. - 1st century A.D (800 years)
  • Romans 1 st century A.D. - 4th century A.D. (400 years)
  • Then came the Byzantines, Persians and Islam in the 7th century
  • One lesson - The Egyptians held rule for a long time.
I'm standing over a toilet, you see one to the left as well. Nice privacy wall in between. There's more history for you. Am I fixating on toilets? You be the judge.

Grave markers in the background. Nice garden.

Oh yeah, lots of steps and exercise with this castle.

Lots of steps.

This is one big castle, run a various times by the Italians, Germans and English. Each country built their own tower, called remarkably the Italian, German and English Towers. Go figure. The German and English Towers are behind Jenée. I forgot which is which.

We got back on board Jungle and were booted out of our anchor spot by the Turkish Coast Guard. They dressed like guys from Macky-D's. Nice orange shirts. I think the head guy was Capt. Hdfrrty Jdgrmtz (Turks dont like vowels, tough to pronounce) Oh well they were nice enough, but as we picked up anchor and moved they kept waving us further and further out. So, to hell with it, we sailed out of Gumbet to Bitez Harbor around the corner. No big deal. (Turkish good night)

Hold on a second. Last night I was grooving to the Monkees playing at the beachfront disco. Tonight it's Manfred Mann and Do Wah Ditty. My heads gonna explode. Far out !!! The only thing that could top this is "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy of Company B". Wait a minute ...
